A jury was being chosen for a murder trial nearly three decades ago in California. The state was seeking a death sentence for Ernest Dykes, who had been charged with killing a 9-year-old boy during a robbery in Oakland. Jew?” read one. Yes,” read another. The notes — just handwritten scribbles — were discovered recently in an internal case file from the 1990s when Mr. Dykes was convicted of murder and sent to death row.

Live video from the area showed fountains of bright-orange molten rock spewing from fissures in the ground, in sharp contrast to the still-dark night sky. “Warning: A volcanic eruption started north of Sylingarfell,” the country’s meteorological office said on its website. Marco Di Marco/APIntense earthquake activity began around 5:30 a.m. and the outbreak itself started some 30 minutes later, it added. Thursday’s eruption took place some way from Grindavik and was unlikely to pose a direct threat to the town, Icelandic geophysicist Ari Trausti Gudmundsson told Reuters. Icelandic authorities in November started building dykes that can help divert burning lava flows away from homes and critical infrastructure.

Climate Change Conference (COP 28) that opens on Nov. 30 in Dubai. Neither floods nor fires are new to Greece but with climate change, they are becoming a frequent disruptor to an economy dependent on tourism and farming. "We have to change our prediction methods," Skylakakis said, acknowledging the rapid pace of climate change. Mitsotakis has urged the EU to top up its solidarity fund and help countries tackle the impact of climate change. Adaptation measures worth 67 billion euros could reduce that loss to 510 billion euros, the country's leading economic think tank IOBE said in a February report.

The 35-year-old Frenchwoman brought back two bronze medals from the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games on the track and she now looks set to take part in the Paris 2024 Olympics after claiming the paracycling road race world title last year. Sport, however, is also a platform for Patouillet, also a gay rights activist, to raise awareness against discrimination on any basis, be it gender, sexual orientation or disability. In 2022, she sported rainbow-coloured hair at the 2022 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in a bid to spark conversation on LGBTQIA+ rights. "Athletes who left an impression on me through their activist commitments to fight against discrimination, they are rather Anglo-Saxon. "I hope that the (2024) Games in Paris will give rise, or at least be an opportunity for certain athletes, to speak out on these subjects and that, after that, there will be changes on this."

In adapting the series — which Ms. George first read on the recommendation of a college boyfriend who thought she might like it — the playwright aimed to retain Ms. Bechdel’s dialogue over all else. After retaining the spirit of the characters, Ms. George went on a hunt for audio cues. “I think it’s a highlight of this series that we got actual audio footage,” Ms. George said. Ms. Diamond grew up hiding Ms. Bechdel’s comics inside other books while at Barnes & Noble with her family. She was unbothered about the jump from page to headphones, saying the comic’s “rich characters” would be able to sustain an audio series.

“There’s a law, a burning objects law, that says they can be prosecuted but our prosecutor’s not doing that.”CNN has reached out to Tracci for comment. Dykes, who was arrested on Friday, and Smith, who was arrested in early January, are both in custody. The separate crime Smith has been charged with carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The demonstration at UVA was followed by a “Unite the Right” rally held the next day in downtown Charlottesville that turned violent and later deadly. Counter-protestor Heather Heyer was killed when a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters gathered to oppose the gathering of White nationalist and other right-wing groups.
[1/5] Soccer Football - UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifier - Group A - Scotland v Cyprus - Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland, Britain - March 25, 2023 Cyprus' Minas Antoniou in action with Scotland's Callum McGregor and Stuart Armstrong Action Images via Reuters/Ed SykesMarch 25 (Reuters) - Scotland beat Cyprus 3-0 in their first Euro 2024 Group A qualifier on Saturday after second-half substitute Scott McTominay grabbed a double at Hampden Park. The second half was a far less entertaining affair, however, as Scotland failed to build on their advantage. But Steve Clarke's substitutions eventually worked as McTominay doubled the lead in the 87th minute. McTominay then scored again in added time when Cyprus failed to clear a cross into the box, with Robertson laying the ball into the path of the midfielder to score. Scotland next play Spain on Tuesday when Cyprus visit Armenia.
HONG KONG, March 11 (Reuters) - Three former members of a Hong Kong group that organised annual vigils to mark China's 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, were jailed on Saturday for four and a half months for not complying with a national security police request for information. Chow Hang-tung, 38, a prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist and former vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China, was among those convicted by a magistrate's court. The now-disbanded Alliance was the main organiser of Hong Kong's June 4 candlelight vigil for victims of China's Tiananmen Square crackdown. The national security law, which punishes acts including subversion and collusion with foreign forces, has been criticised by some Western governments as a tool to crush dissent. The Hong Kong and Chinese governments say the law had brought stability since it was enacted in 2020 in response to mass pro-democracy protests in 2019.
Independent Lens“No Straight Lines” also profiles Mary Wings, who is credited with publishing the first known queer comic book, “Come Out Comics,” in 1973. The stark findings underscore that, despite decades of effort, hospitals in the United States still have a long way to go to improve patient safety, experts say. A total of 222 adverse events were considered preventable, meaning an error resulted in patient harm. Twenty-nine people, or 1% of the total of those admitted, experienced serious preventable adverse events that resulted in serious harm. The most common adverse events overall (nearly 40%) were related to medications given in the hospital. It used data from patients hospitalized in New York state in 1984, and found that only about 4% of hospitalized patients experienced harm.
3 TCU 65-7 Monday night to become the first team to win consecutive College Football Playoff national championships. TCU (13-2), the first Cinderella team of the playoff era, never had a chance against the Georgia juggernaut. No team has ever scored more points in a national championship game, dating to the beginning of the BCS in 1998. Georgia vanquished the Tide to break a 41-year national title drought last season, avenging its only regular-season loss in the process. They were within a victory of the program’s first national title since 1938.
First-year coach Sonny Dykes and four-year starting quarterback Max Duggan are deservedly getting the credit for putting Texas Christian one win away from its first college football title since the 1930s. Yet no one person has molded this Horned Frogs team quite as much as one man who never coached there: the late Mike Leach. Leach, the innovative coach credited with introducing the pass-heavy “Air Raid” scheme to football, died last month of a heart attack at age 61. Long before he arrived at Mississippi State, his final team, he influenced a generation of coaches who went on to change all levels of the game.
ATLANTA—Party crashers don’t tend to thrive in the College Football Playoff, which is invariably dominated by just a few traditional powers. And at the start of the 2022 season, Texas Christian didn’t look like a team that belonged in the sport’s most exclusive soirée. The Horned Frogs were coming off a 5-7 season in 2021, a situation so dire that they hired a new coach, Sonny Dykes, away from Southern Methodist, their crosstown rival in Dallas-Fort Worth. As 2022 began, TCU was unranked and nowhere near the top 25.
And nearly a third of seniors say they either plan to work through the age of 70 or never retire, according to a study by BlackRock. "The United States is definitely facing a retirement crisis," said Nari Rhee, a director of the retirement security program at the UC Berkeley Labor Center. "If you're retired and on a fixed income, inflation really, really hurts," said Rhee. One million dollars in a retirement account just two years ago is worth about $120,000 less when adjusted for inflation, and now, with that financial backdrop, a quarter of Americans say that are expecting to delay their retirement due to rising consumer costs, according to a survey by BMO Harris Bank. Retirees like Juanita Dykes, a former factory worker living in Rural Retreat, Virginia, say more things are becoming impossible to afford.
